| Plastic bags don’t decompose, instead they photo-degrade. That means that they break up into small pieces that contaminate soil for years. Plastic bags take an average of 1000 years to decompose. Compare that with a reusable tote bag that can carry the contents of 2-3 bags on each use and can be used multiple times. Each tote saves around 1000 bags. The math is self evident. Add to that the fact that the tote is made in part of reduced scrap fabric and the impact over the current standard is enormous and self evident. It does not score a perfect 5 as the bags are made in China even though they are light and have a small carbon footprint due to transport. The Baggu shopping totes can be recycled by sending them back to the manufacturer for a refund. |
